Leon Williams, star of the front cover of Shagging In the Carolinas, Arcadia Publishing's Marketing Coordinator Kelly Hamilton, and Shagging In the Carolinas author Fessa John Hook at the official S.C. book launch at J.B. Pivots in Charleston, SC, June 23, 2006.

Ardis Courtney--star of Shagging In the Carolinas (she and her husband are in the opening and closing pictures of the book) meets Fessa' Hook at the Wild Wing Cafe's fantastic Sunday night Shag Party, downtown Spartanburg, SC, July 9, 2006.

At the Fresh Water Coast Festival, July 15 (l to r):  Pat Patterson, the Voice of the Fresh Water Coast on two Beach shows every Saturday and Sunday on Sunny 103.5 FM, Rhonda McDaniel--smokin' on the keyboards and the Beach Music Top 40 charts for two straight years, and Fessa Hook.

Shaggin' Round the Flagpole at Myrtle Beach Pavilion July 19.  Ginny Maynard and Tom Jones demonstrate a 'Carolina Soul Cocktail' (1 part Greensboro and 1 part Myrtle Beach).

Jr Shaggers Shaggin' round the Myrtle Beach Pavilion Flagpole July 12--the crowd loved them!

Bo Schronce and the Fantastic Shakers kicked off a fantastic evening at Jillian's July 20th.  When you're in Columbia, SC on a Thursday evening, you *must* make Jillian's your first stop (in the Vista area downtown).

The Jillian's crowd packed two dance floors throughout the evening with the music of longtime DJ Butch Davidson (the only DJ ever named an Official SOS DJ) and the Fantastic Shakers.

Walter Upchurch played early evening July 21st for the Savannah Beach Bop etc party followed by Bobby "Mr. Beach" Malphrus.  (Also in attendance with stories galore was President of the National Association of Rhythm and Blues DJs, Tommy Polzin, along with Edee "Boogie Babe" Dickinson from Casselberry, Florida).

Savannah Beach Bop etc lives up to its name -- a wide variety of smiles and styles thanks to the able administration of club President Bob McEwen.

The only CSA / SPA Shag contest outside the Carolinas is in Richmond, Va.  This year's was July 22nd.  Superb dancing, an elegant setting -- the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens Auditorium -- sponsored by Visions Dance Club, now in its 4th year and sponsored by Club Razzles. This event is co-sponsored by the Richmond Shag Club, Virginia Beach Shag Club, Northern Va Shag Club, Battlefield Boogie Club (Fredericksburg) and the Steel City Boogie Club.  DJ Butch Metcalf was the presiding DJ (top right).  Thanks to Kevin Byrnes of the Richmond Shag Club for his extraordinary hospitality.

Original Myrtle Beach Pavilion Shaggers--July 19, Shaggin' Round the Flagpole, the Final Season.

The Last Shag Around the Flagpole celebration at the Myrtle Beach Pavilion July 26, 2006 snagged Thorin Brentmar and Hayley Eberhardt.  Driving from Key West to Maine this summer, this Santa Cruz, CA couple found the Shag beat irresistable for their brand of West Coast Swing and Lindy.

At the Fresh Water Coast Festival, July 15 (l to r):  John McElrath - founder of the Swinging Medallions, Hack Bartley, Caesar, and Jake Bartley of Shuffle.  This 1st Annual event was held at the Plum Branch, SC Yacht Club in perfect weather with a great line-up of performers as a fundraiser for Carolina Beach Music Awards memberships.  (According to the CBMA, 5,000 members opens the possibility of Beach Music becoming one of the categories in the Grammys).

The Tams take a bow at the Jekyll Island Beach Music Festival.  August 12th was a gorgeous day celebrating the 40th Anniversary of "Double Shot (of My Baby's Love)" with the Swingin' Medallions, Hack Bartley and Shuffle, and Statesboro Blues!

Lake Lure Shag Club held a *Dancing for Fun* Shag contest during their September 9th party (Ok, Ok, there was money involved too--but they were Dancing For Fun!).  Sponsor for the contest was Ken Jordan of Lake's Edge Realty.  The top 3 couples, pictured above left to right, are LeRhea Armstrong R&B Shag Club Spartanburg, Ron & Becky Blankenship Mountain Shag Club Asheville, Tom Armstrong R&B Shag Club Spartanburg, and Ellen and Chip Knothe R&B Shag Club Spartanburg.

The Rumbling Bald Resort and Lake Lure Shag Club Halloween party and dance pulled ghosts and goblins from far and wide (Rutherford Shag Club, Marion, R& B Shag Club, Mountain Shag Club from Asheville, Palmetto Shag Club Columbia, Carolina Shag Club Greenville).  The spooksters were joined that night by the American Singles Golf Association, with chapters from Raleigh, Wilmington, Peachtree City, Georgia, Augusta, Milwaukee, Asheville, Hickory, Lake Lure and Wichita. We had a ball on the Rumbling Bald Resort Terrace overlooking beautiful Lake Lure.  Thanks to Joe Wilkes, Mark Dirks, and Ronnie Gooch, and Sean, too!

Dot Jarrett, President of the Lake Lure Shag Club, is one of the folks in this picture--but she's in disguise!

Lake Lure Shag Club party at the Margarita Grille's outdoor pavilion right next door to the Lake Lure Inn, Saturday night, September 9th.  Folks from everywhere:  Lake Lure Shag Club, Mountain Shag Club, Upstate Shag Club, R&B Shag Club, Island Shag Club, Rutherfordton County Shag Club, (who did I miss?).  A beautiful night under the stars next to the Lake.  Thanks to Dot Jarrett, President of the Lake Lure Shag Club -- she and many volunteers put on a great party!

The next afternoon (Sunday), from 2 to 10 pm, the R&B Shag Club and Upstate Shag Club presented the First Annual Pre-SOS Benefit for St. Luke's Free Medical Clinic and Mobile Meals.  They offered Free Shag Lessons, Cash drawing, event t-shirts and DJs: Bobby Vaughn, Jeff Foster, Billy Waldrep, David O'Quinn, Jayne Elston, Sid Talbot, David Graham, & Skip Lancaster.  By all accounts it was a resounding success (we've seen some pictures, but aren't sure we can get the Billy Waldrep dance shots past our censors--we had the same problem at the big party in Daytona a couple of weeks earlier).  Congratulations to both clubs, they have Spartanburg rockin'!!!!

Clarksburg Local Area Shag Society (C.L.A.S.S.) Club President Cindy Ritch demonstrated an endless supply of energy all weekend long!

Shaggin' With C.L.A.S.S. Oct 20 and 21.

Shaggin' With C.L.A.S.S. Shag Club -- Under the Palm Trees in Clarksburg, WVa for the 1st Annual Inland Beach Blast.

Roy Scott, ETV Radio, interviewed Fessa Hook at a book signing at ChazzFest September 16th in Charleston.  (What a day!  The Catalinas performed, along with Buddy Guy and Al Green closed the evening).  Roy is the Voice of "Your Day" on South Carolina's ETV Radio.

Beaufort Shag Club, November 18.  Thanks to Bill Farmer for the invitation to bring "Shagging In the Carolinas" to the Low Country (and dance and dance and dance).

DJ Rodney Still from Aiken (back, middle), kept the floor full throughout the evening.

Beaufort Shag Club's main instructress, Dinah, left front--(it's impossible to tell she's running on non-stop Energizer Bunny batteries)!
